Why Your Phone Slows Down Over Time (And What Actually Fixes It)

It's not just you. It's not your imagination. And no, the company isn't secretly trying to push you toward an upgrade. Well, mostly not.

Every phone slows down eventually. The reasons are more interesting than you'd think.

Last time we broke down what actually happens the moment you tap an app icon — the RAM shuffle, the CPU spinning up, the operating system doing roughly forty things before a single pixel appears on screen. If you missed that one, go back and read it first. It makes this one land a lot better.

Today we're getting into something that affects basically everyone who has owned a phone for more than a year. Why does it get slower? Not in a vague hand-wavy way. Actually, specifically, why. And what can you do about it that isn't complete nonsense.


01  ·  The Battery

The slow death nobody tells you about.

Your phone's battery is a lithium-ion cell, and it ages with every single charge cycle. Every time it goes from low to full, it degrades a little. After about 500 cycles, most batteries are running at around 80% of their original capacity. After a thousand, even less than that.

Here is where it gets interesting. A degraded battery cannot deliver power as fast as a fresh one. When your processor needs a sudden burst of electricity — loading a heavy page, running a game, taking a burst of photos — an old battery struggles to supply that quickly enough. So what does the phone do?

Think of it this way

A new battery is like full water pressure from the mains. An old battery is a tap that's partially blocked. The water still gets through, just slower, and it can't handle a sudden heavy demand the way it used to.

It throttles the processor. The phone deliberately runs slower to match what the battery can actually supply, because the alternative is it shutting off suddenly mid-call. Apple got into enormous trouble around 2017 for doing this quietly without telling users. That was the "batterygate" situation. But every phone maker does some version of it, because there really isn't a better option when the battery gets old enough.

The fix is more satisfying than most people expect. A battery replacement, usually somewhere between $50 and $80 depending on your phone, can make a two year old device feel essentially new again. It's the single most impactful thing you can do and most people never think to do it.

02  ·  The Storage

Running out of space isn't just inconvenient. It actually breaks things.

When your phone's storage creeps above about 85% full, performance takes a noticeable hit. Not because photos are competing with apps for space in some abstract way, but for a very specific technical reason that most people have never heard of.

We talked last time about RAM, the fast memory your phone uses while it's actively doing things. When that runs out, your phone has a fallback. It temporarily writes data to storage instead, the way a person might jot a note on paper when they can't hold everything in their head. This process is called swapping, and it's a lot slower than real RAM, but it works well enough as a safety net.

The problem is that swapping requires free storage space to write to. If your storage is nearly full, there is nowhere to swap to. The operating system starts making increasingly desperate choices about what to keep, what to close, and what to reload from scratch every time you switch apps. That is the jankiness you feel. That is why a phone with two gigabytes left feels like a completely different device from one with twenty free.

Getting below 70% full and keeping it there makes a real difference. Not by deleting a few photos, but by actually going through apps you haven't opened in months and removing them properly. The ones that quietly sit there taking up space and occasionally running something in the background.


03  ·  The Software

The app you downloaded two years ago is not the same app anymore.

Instagram was about 30MB in 2018. It's over 300MB today. Your phone's hardware didn't grow with it.

Apps get heavier over time. More features, more animations, more things running quietly in the background checking for notifications and refreshing feeds. Each update is built with newer, faster devices in mind, because that's what the majority of active users are running. Your phone from two years ago is increasingly an afterthought in that calculation.

Your hardware is physically the same as the day you bought it. Nothing has worn out mechanically, nothing has changed inside the chip. What's changed is the expectation placed on that hardware by every piece of software you run. The gap between what apps assume and what your device can actually deliver gets a little wider with each update.

The operating system does the same thing. iOS 26 was designed with the iPhone 16 in mind. It still runs on older phones, but those phones weren't built anticipating its requirements. The visual effects, the background processes, the security features all quietly add up.

There's no perfect fix for this one. But you can slow the drift. Turn off background app refresh for apps that don't genuinely need it. Reduce motion under Accessibility settings — this one actually speeds up how the whole phone feels, not just specific apps. And be a bit more selective about updates. Not every app needs to update the moment a new version drops.


04  ·  What Actually Helps

The short honest list, no snake oil.

A lot of "speed up your phone" content online is either useless or actively counterproductive. RAM cleaner apps, task killers, cache wipers — most of these either do nothing measurable or force the operating system to redo work it had already done sensibly. Here's what genuinely makes a difference.

  • 🔋Check your battery health first. On iPhone go to Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health. Below 80% and a replacement will do more for your phone than any software tweak ever could.
  • 🗑️Free up storage properly. Go through apps you haven't touched in six months. Not just photos. Aim to stay below 70% full and it'll stay that way.
  • 📲Audit background app activity. In Settings on both iOS and Android, you can see which apps are refreshing in the background. Most of them don't need to be. Each one is a small ongoing tax on your battery and memory.
  • 🔄Restart once a week. Not every day. Your OS learns your usage patterns over time and that's actually useful. But a weekly restart clears out memory leaks that accumulate from apps that aren't as tidy as they should be.
  • ⚙️Turn off reduce motion under Accessibility. This cuts the animation overhead and makes the whole phone feel snappier, especially on devices that are two or more years old.

None of this restores a four year old phone to day-one performance. But the gap is smaller than most people think, and most people never try any of it.
